La Peña de
Bomba!
(Special Bomba Event)
La Peña de Bomba!
Albertan Latin/Jazz/World band Bomba! has long been dedicated
to exploring the various grooves that make up the different
forms of Latin music. To assist the band in delving more deeply
into their musical roots, the band will be holding monthly
“peñas”. The peña is a chance for
different members of Bomba to come together in special variations
and explore the influences in their music.
The peña tradition started in Latin America in the
early sixties. The main idea was to have a gathering place
where artists of all disciplines could share a space. The
mission of the peña was to provide good food, music
and an overall aesthetic response.
Peñas in Chile, where Bomba! bandleader/percussionist
Mario Allende is from, became a major backbone of the cultural
program during Salvador Allende's government. It was here
where artists, poets, musicians, cooks - gathered to preserve
cultural forms and to create new ones.
The setting for la Peña de Bomba! will be the wonderful
Blue Chair Cafe, an intimate, relaxed and most appropriate
venue for such an event to take place. Each month the various
and diverse rhythms will be embraced and performed with the
assurance, communal joy, virtuosity and spirit long characteristic
of Allende and his artistic compañeros.
The Peña primera is taking place Friday, February
29 at 8:00 pm. All Peñas will be lead by Allende, this
first one will feature drummer Raul Tabera from Matanzas,
Cuba; singer Luis Emilio Rios from Havana, Cuba; and violinist
Aldo Aguirre from Santa Clara, Cuba... so of course the band
will explore the Cuban influence in Bomba's music this night.
Tickets are $15 in advance, ($18 at the door, but we are
fairly certain there may not be any). Call the Blue Chair
(9624 - 76 ave) at 989-2861 to reserve for dinner and you
will be guaranteed a seat for the night.
